International Workers’ Memorial Day

Around a hundred attended this year’s IWMD event in Castle Park. This year the TUC focus was on asbestos which was covered by Nick Seymour who spoke from Thompson solicitors. Tim Northcott from the GMB spoke on behalf of the Wessex water branch who lost 4 members in the explosion at Avonmouth treatment plant in 2020. And the ongoing fight for justice. Steve Preddy the Unite Regional secretary spoke of the enormous impact of death in the workplace and linked it to the battle of the bin workers in Birmingham. Paul from the NUJ highlighted the dangers that journalists face in reporting the news especially in Gaza and the international nature of the struggle to defend health and safety.

Bristol Trades Union Council Vice-President Roger Thomas highlighted the number and nature of the deaths in work in the last 12 months and the need for union organisation. An organised workplace is a much safer one. And he welcomed the family and friends of Paul Oakley who sadly died in November from an accident at work. Sending the condolences of everyone.
