We were overjoyed to celebrate May Day in Bristol on Saturday with marching with banners and members from Unison, Unite, PCS, Bristol Palestine Alliance, ACORN, Equity, SWP, IWW and the Socialist Party.
The speeches highlighted the impact of cuts to jobs and services; the inhumane massacre of Palestinians; and the aim of bosses and the government to divide workers to stop us from fighting back.
All the speeches spoke of mobilising and pushing back: demos against benefit cuts for disabled people and the attacks on trans rights; strikes of the bin workers in Birmingham and education workers in the NEU; local government workers in Bath fighting against pay cuts; the movement to support Palestine and the prevention of Israeli state supporters performing at the Bristol Beacon and campaigns to stop cuts to arts funding.
Speakers this year included Sheila Caffrey (Bristol Trades Council Secretary), Kate Pearce (NUJ), Sam Kiddel (Acorn), Amy Rushton (Bath and NE Somerset UNISON), Lynda Rooke (Equity), Rob Mitchell (UNISON Health) and Raven Hart (PCS).
The workers united will never be defeated!
